Lekgwathi: Is Sesane The Next OJ?

Lekgwathi: Is Sesane The Next OJ?

With a strong performance in the last phase of the previous season and a good start in the MTN8, many football pundits believe Orlando Pirates' young defender Thabiso Sesane could be the next big thing for Bucs.

There have even been comparisons to Mbulelo "Old John" (OJ) Mabizela. However, despite being happy and impressed with the Pirates development product, former Bucs captain Lucky Lekgwathi believes it's too soon to compare the two.

Talking to Soccer Laduma in an exclusive interview, the Pirates legend said that with time, Sesane can be just as good as OJ, but he is not there yet and people should not put pressure on him.

"He is still young. He still has to learn. OJ was a complete player. Thabiso (Sesane) should learn from him. Yes, he is something else considering his age and the way he is playing. One day he can reach the OJ standards. It's all a matter of time, discipline and being humble. He should study Mabizela's game and look at his stats and see where he can improve to be like him. It's like wearing jersey number 10 at Pirates. You should first look at the history of that jersey 10 and who wore it before then study their games and learn from them," Lekgwathi believes.

In addition, the double treble-winning captain further added that he is impressed with Sesane's conduct on the field of play and has shown leadership skills so far.

"He is solid. He has impressed me. He has surprised me. He is confident. Look at the game against Cape Town City at Orlando Stadium. He told Thalente (Mbatha) what he did wrong. That's what we need. He has to communicate and not be afraid of senior players if they have made a mistake. That shows you he is a leader. A captain on the field of play. He is that good."

In conclusion, Lekgwathi stated that since Sesane started playing, he has brought in healthy competition to the central defensive position.

"He has brought healthy competition in the team. Now he has to keep on working and knock on the door to Bafana Bafana then Europe. But to do that he had to be humble, disciplined and hard working. But so far, I am impressed and if he continues like this. Yes, he could be like OJ one day. Talented he is but you know young players sometimes they can go off the rails. But if he remains grounded, humble and disciplined then the future is bright for him," Lekgwathi concluded.
