Saleng Edges Closer To Return As Pirates Chase Triple Final Dream

Saleng Edges Closer To Return As Pirates Chase Triple Final Dream

It’s back to action for Orlando Pirates this afternoon as they continue their demanding schedule, balancing strong performances across all competitions.

Fresh from booking a spot in the CAF Champions League semi-finals after a tense goalless draw against MC Alger at Orlando Stadium midweek, the Buccaneers now shift focus to domestic silverware.

Their next challenge sees them return to Esgodini, where they host Marumo Gallants in the eagerly awaited Nedbank Cup semi-final.

Pirates are chasing history as they aim to reach their third consecutive Nedbank Cup Final, having lifted the trophy in the previous two seasons under the steady guidance of oach Jose Riveiro.

Despite the tight fixture list, the Sea Robbers have maintained form in the Betway Premiership, where they still stand an outside chance of clinching the title.

However, Mamelodi Sundowns remain in pole position and continue to set a formidable pace at the top of the log.

This afternoon’s encounter also carries a touch of revenge, with Pirates still licking their wounds from a 2-0 defeat to Gallants in March.

That game, played at the Free State Stadium, saw coach Riveiro absent from the touchline due to suspension – a factor some believe influenced the outcome.

The loss dented their league ambitions, but some positive results since then, including a memorable win over Sundowns at FNB Stadium, have reignited belief.

In terms of team news, there’s a positive update on Monnapule Saleng, who is edging closer to full fitness, according to sources.

The dynamic winger, who has been out of action since December, may still sit out this clash, but his nearing return is a boost for the team heading into the season’s climax.

With a place in the final on the line, the Buccaneers are expected to come out with purpose, seeking both progression and redemption.
