CAFCL Final At Stake: Will Riveiro Back Mabasa Or Makgopa?

CAFCL Final At Stake: Will Riveiro Back Mabasa Or Makgopa?

With a place in the CAF Champions League final on the line, all eyes are on Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro and the attacking decisions he faces ahead of the semi-final second leg against Pyramids FC at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

Following a goalless first leg at Orlando Stadium, the Buccaneers know they must score in Egypt if they are to advance to their first final in the competition since 2013.

The key question? Whether Riveiro sticks with Tshegofatso Mabasa to lead the line or turns to the industrious Evidence Makgopa.

Mabasa, who started the first leg, is enjoying a fine season. The striker has netted 13 goals across all competitions, including two in the Champions League.

A proven goal poacher, Mabasa’s sharp movement and finishing ability make him a constant threat in the box — and his presence would be a bold statement of intent from Pirates.

On the other hand, Makgopa offers a different profile. He may not boast the same scoring record — eight goals in all competitions, with one coming in CAF competition — but what he lacks in goals, he makes up for in work rate, hold-up play and tactical discipline.

His ability to draw defenders and open space for teammates could prove crucial in a tight game where margins are small.

Riveiro gave Mabasa the nod in the first leg, with Makgopa entering as a second-half substitute to stretch the Pyramids defence. It remains to be seen whether the Spanish tactician will tweak his approach or trust the same formula that earned a clean sheet at home.

With the stakes higher than ever and Pirates needing at least one goal to progress, Riveiro's striker selection could prove decisive in determining whether they make history or fall short once again.

One thing is certain — the Buccaneers must be brave in Cairo. And whoever gets the nod to lead the line will carry the hopes of millions on their shoulders.
