After former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Ronwen Williams rose to the top of the game, former goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has revealed who he believes is next to take over the throne.
Khune is declared as one of the modern goalkeepers to revolutionise the goalkeeper role in South Africa during his peak at Chiefs.
With the Ventersdorp native goalminder in the twilight of his career, Williams has come to the fore as the undisputed Bafana Bafana's number one and put his name in the record books after becoming the first Africa-based shot-stopper to be shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or Yashin trophy [Best goalkeeper of the year] award.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos drew criticism from supporters, after in Williams' absence, played AmaZulu shot-stopper Veli Mothwa, ahead of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, where Mothwa made two blunders, that led to conceding two cheap goals, as South Africa had to fight to earn a 2-2 draw.

However, Josephs believes the former Chippa United goalkeeper is not far behind from making his mark, as an heir to the likes of Khune and Williams.
"We have up and coming goalkeeper Chaine in our camp. Sorry, we had no goalkeepers at Pirates and finally, me personally, I feel like Chaine has the stature and the capabilities to go to the next level. What has been a big plus for him is that he has the goalkeeper coach Tyrone [Damons]," Josephs said on Soccerbeat YouTube Channel.

"I've worked with him [Damons] and played with him as well. He has the right coach. As a goalkeeper, Chaine just needs that confidence in defence and you can see now he's starting to get the confidence with the continuity Jose [Riveiro] has created in his defence and you can see him grow.
"You can see him becoming this goalkeeper and definitely in a few years' time, with the continuity and the mind set he's in now, he will definitely take over from Ronwen Williams, because we all had a time we go up, we move along and Ronwen has play for as long as he can, he has to do it until the wheels come off, because he's in exceptional form. But for the next generation, the next keeper of South Africa Chaine has that for me," Josephs added.
Damons was appointed as a goalkeeper coach at the same time the new technical team, led by Riveiro, was announced in June 2022.
