5 Ways Saleng Issue Affects Pirates

With Orlando Pirates and Monnapule Saleng still deadlocked in a contractual matter, Soccer Laduma analyses the effect of the saga at the club.

Fear factor

According to reports in local media, Pirates, are understood not to be keen to bowing down to Saleng's salary demands. This step will send a strong message to current and future players that the club and the badge has to be respected at all costs. The saying that 'no player is bigger than the club' is popular in football and Pirates would not want to lose their fear factor.

Will it affect new signings?

With the media and social media going overboad about how Saleng is allegedly under-paid, prospective players from other clubs could think twice before coming to the Pirates negotiating table, provided they have other offers. If the Buccaneers don't solve the matter by retaining the former PSL Players' Player of the Season, they will have the stigma around being economical with salaries, which could scare off potential good signings.

Agents shake up

The controversial and alleged option on Saleng's contract has shaken the agency space. In future, agents will be more guarded to include or agree to options on player contracts, even across other PSL clubs.

Is an option on player contracts non-negotiable at Pirates?

Tshegofatso Mabasa, who was rumoured to be on the wanted list at Mamelodi Sundowns, recently had his two-year option triggered by the club after he returned on loan from Moroka Swallows in February last year.

Has Saleng influenced Riveiro’s contract?

Losing a key player who is not injured due to contractual issues should have frustrated head coach Jose Riveiro. Arguably, Pirates could have had more points, if the Saleng matter was dealt with and was on the field all along. Riveiro could argue that to Pirates management in his post-season report.

Saleng let the dessing room down?

Discounting Saleng's grievances, his actions could be seen as a spoiled kid throwing his toys out of the cot. Various opinions in the fraternity believe that player-club issues could be solved at the end of the season, while he continued playing.

Is he making himself bigger than the team?

The dressing room at the Buccaneers could feel that the 26-year-old let them down by going AWOL at a crucial stage of the season and he may not be welcomed the same by his teammates, if he were to solve his issues with the club's management.
