UEFA Champions League
Half Time: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid
Date: 24 May 2014
Venue: Estadio da Luz
A goal from Diego Gordin handed Atletico Madrid a 1-0 advantage over Real Madrid going into the half time break of the UEFA Champions League final at the Estadio da Luz in Portugal on Saturday night.
It was a cagey start to the game by both teams with neither allowing the other any space in the middle of the park with Cristiano Ronaldo in particular being closely watched by the Atletico defence.
This resulted in chances on goal being few and far between as both teams struggled to break down the others defensive structures.
One of the biggest talking points of the half was the early exit of Atletico's top striker in Diego Costa who had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Adrian Lopez in the ninth minute.
Gareth Bale should probably have opened the scoring just after the half hour mark when he drove into the box and saw his 16-yard shot shave the wrong side of the upright.
Atletico took the lead in the 36th minute due to some poor goalkeeping by Iker Casillas who shot off his line and was beaten by a looping header from Diego Gordin.
Statically, Real saw more of the ball but both teams had the same number of shots on goal with three apiece.
