Mphela: Chiefs Need More Than Appollis

However, former South Africa and Amakhosi striker Katlego "Killer" Mphela believes that while Appollis is a top-tier player, he alone cannot transform Chiefs' fortunes.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Mphela, who also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, emphasized that improving the team's fortunes requires a collective effort.

"He is a good player and can improve the team but to change the team's fortunes they don't just need one player. We have seen this with (Gaston) Sirino. The team needs collective work to change their fortunes. You saw they brought in Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly but they could not change the team's fortunes. They are good players individually but they were not enough to change the fortunes," Mphela told the Siya crew.

"Any team that can sign Appollis can improve. Look at what he does at Bafana Bafana and also at Polokwane City. But to change the fortune at Chiefs they need more than just signing Appollis. Obviously it will be a good signing but definitely not for changing the fortunes of the team. There is always pressure if they depend on one player" Mphela added.

Mphela further stressed the importance of a broader strategy for Chiefs, suggesting that additional acquisitions in the January transfer window could support a stronger team foundation.

"They need to sign at least two or three new players. A top striker can score goals for fun, a defensive midfielder and at least a winger. But I think a goalkeeper can also help. I have seen Ox (Mthethwa) had a comeback in the defensive midfield part but what if he doesn't come to the party? There should be someone to cover for him. They need a box to box midfielder.

"A number eight who can control the midfield but I also think the team needs a versatile defender who can be comfortable in any position at the back. So, some signings in January could help change the team's fortunes," Killer observed.

As Amakhosi prepare for another game at Peter Mokaba Stadium this weekend against Appollis' Polokwane City, the focus remains on potential roster changes to meet their aspirations.

While the potential addition of Appollis would undoubtedly enhance Chiefs' squad, achieving substantial change will require a comprehensive team effort and strategic signings.

The upcoming transfer window presents an opportunity for Chiefs to bolster their line-up and set the stage for a more competitive season.
