A Trip Down Memory Lane With Chiefs History Makers

A Trip Down Memory Lane With Chiefs History Makers

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed a trip down memory lane after some of the club's living Amakhosi icons were hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

"Members of Chiefs' quadruple winning team of 1989, among them Mark Tovey, William 'Cool Cat' Shongwe, Mike 'Sporo' Mangena, Gardner Seale, Shane Macgregor, Albert Bwalya and Gary Bailey caught up on Saturday to reminisce and rekindle memories of their proud playing days representing the Gold and Black," read an official press release.

There was more detailed information on the club website and pictures told a thousand words as the legends relived the glory days.

Jessica Motaung, the director of marketing and daughter of chairman Kaizer Motaung, was part of the get together at Madiba's Houghton residence, now converted into a boutique hotel.

"These engagements with our legends are very crucial for the club. We pulled this gathering off in a short space of time, but we are very happy to work with our former players to host these kinds of events. Engaging with the class of 1989 helped us understand from a human and football element just what these extraordinary players meant to us a club and to football in the country – and also what drove them to succeed," Motaung said.

She confirmed more plans to celebrate former players who have won silverware over the years and gave Chiefs the moniker of South Africa's "cup kings".

"We have a few more of these reunions planned for the coming year. It is crucial for us as a club to connect with our past, as it makes us stronger going forward. We hope to include our current senior team and youth team players in some of these events in the future," added Motaung.
