The story
Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng's rise over the last couple of years has been a marvel to witness for South African football fans.
Having made over 50 appearances for Ezimnyama Ngenkani since his debut in 2023, "iPresident Yama2k" as he's affectionately known has amassed 32 goal contributions in all competitions.
The 20-year-old already has a healthy trophy cabinet, winning four cup titles under Jose Riveiro and some individual awards including the 2024 Gauteng Sports Personality of the Year and the 2023/24 PSL Young Player of the Year.
With all these achievements and fan adoration in such a short period in his career, it was only matter of time before a song was made in dedication to Mofokeng.
Up-and-coming amapiano musician, Shimi-Boi stepped in August last year to release "Mofokeng" in collaboration with DK and Mgiftoz SA.
In speaking to Radio 2000's Thabiso Mosia, Shimi-Boi revealed that it's a celebratory song and it's been slowly well received on the various streaming sites.
When asked if he got permission to use Rele's surname from his family for the track, Shimi-Boi explained, "We tried. We actually tried before we released the song."
"With failure [to reach the Mofokeng family] we decided to release the song and we'll hope and push it until they clear it. They heard the song and came to us saying, 'we are hearing the song, we see it's growing, can we sit down?'
"We sat down and came to an agreement. They gave us the blessing to go ahead with the song," shared Shimi-Boi, who admitted to only having a brief conversation with Rele regarding the track.
Mofokeng's mother, Naome cleared the air on their initial worries about the song when it came out. "Yes, you can't make a song for a person without them knowing. There must be concern there."
Naome also revealed that they will seek compensation from the song's royalties if does well. "Obviously [we want compensation] I told them they must bring something on the table, then we'll discuss all of that. We want them to say we've got 'this' and then we can go forward."
"I'm waiting for them to make the offer because they are the ones who made the song," shared Naome.
