The story
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos named a 36-member preliminary squad on Wednesday for June's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe, snubbing forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane.
The Minnesota United star has missed out on Bafana selection since this year's Africa Cup of Nations, continuing Hugo Broos recent trend of not selecting US-based players for the national men's team.
Hlongwane though, has seemingly used the setback as some motivation to get back onto the scoresheet for The Loons, scoring a screamer in their 2-2 draw to LA Galaxy in the MLS.
The Bafana international rattled the cross-bar with a powerful volley, resulting in the ball dropping down and crossing the goal line, an effort that came from just outside the box. It gave his team a first half lead before going on to drop points on their home patch.
Hlongwane's Minnesota side, coached by former Manchester United set-piece coach Eric Ramsey, sits in second place on the MLS Western Conference log — just four points behind Real Salt Lake with two games in hand.
