The story
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, midfielder Neo Maema and defender Terrence Mashego have spotlighted why education is the ultimate game-changer!
The players sat down for a brief chat with Downs' media production team to discuss the importance of furthering their studies as ballers, in order to back themselves up for life after professional football.
"I think what's important is the love for education, as much as it's important, it has to come from you. I studied chemistry and graduated in 2018.
"I had the love for chemistry and there were a lot of things I could've pursued but it came from the passion and love I had for it, it was very important to me," noted Maema in a video shared by Downs on YouTube and their various social media channels.
Maema has a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of the Free State and has always been an advocate for footballer's furthering their studies beyond matric.
For Williams, getting his matric certificate was vital for him in order to chase his football dream. The Bafana skipper has since reentered the academic space to upskill himself further.
"The most important qualification was just finishing matric. I'm glad I got that out of the way. Over the last few years, I've got back into the books. I got a property and investment certificate behind my name because I was looking at going into property," noted Williams.
"That helped broaden my knowledge," added Williams, who is chasing another qualification. "At the moment, I'm enrolled at the Johan Cruyff [Johan Cruyff Institute] to study Sports Management as a post-grad. I'm halfway there, I'll be finishing in June this year and hopefully I'll have the energy to pursue a masters."
Like Ronza, Terrence Mashego also studied Sports Management and also has a Sports Science qualification from the Tshwane University of Technology.
"What inspired me [to study] is football, I'm into football and I understand sports. So, I thought it would be best for me to study something I understand and something I'm more familiar with," said the Bafana Bafana international.
Mashego is also planning to start a branding company after football and would like to study law once he's done with the beautiful game.
Williams mentioned how he treats his studies as a hobby, something he can dedicate a couple of hours to after training. Maema on the other hand, still has plans to chase a post-graduate degree.
