Getting to know Khanya Leshabela
After joining Cape Town City this month and making his debut in the Nedbank Cup against SuperSport United last week, City's social media gave fans a deeper look into Khanya Leshabela.
Soshanguve-born Leshabela came through the ranks at Leicester City before loan spells and lower-league English sides such as Crewe Alexander and Shrewsbury Town.
Now plying his trade in South Africa for the first time, Leshabela seems excited to restart his career in the Mother City, a place he'd never visited before linking up with Eric Tinkler's troops for the first time.
"To be fair, it's been great man. Everyone's been very welcoming, the city's great. As soon as I landed, I was like wow. Because I've actually never been here before," said Leshabela, when asked about how he's finding his new home and club so far...
The versatile midfielder grew up in England and revealed that most of his family is still in Soshanguve, north-west of Pretoria and that he didn't hesitate to take the opportunity to play his football back in SA.
"I was like six, seven-years-old when I started playing, just at school, in primary school. Then in England, we call it Sunday League, so I started playing Sunday League and from there, I just got scouted through like a development centre, Junior Foxes and from there, that's when I joined Leicester," explained Leshabela on his football journey, growing up in the UK.
Describing himself as a "dynamic box-to-box midfielder" Leshabela mentioned that playing in the Premier League, albeit during the COVID-impacted 2019/20 season was a surreal moment for him and that he's ready to achieve all that he can at Cape Town City.
He went on to reflect on his debut, where he missed a penalty during his side's 3-1 loss in the shoot-out to Matsatsantsa, and is delighted to be sharing the pitch with some "exciting young players."
One of those exciting youngsters at City is Lumphumlo "Kaka" Sifumba, who gave Leshabela a hard time with his skills:
"There's levels man," he says on skill level of the ballers at CT City, before lauding Sifumba: "I remember it was my first training session, you know Kaka bro, he hit me with one... he hit me something, bro I don't even know. He left me still, he sent me. That was a welcoming, a welcome to South Africa," he added.
