In "The Story of the Seven" posted on United and adidas' social media pages and YouTube, the aforementioned stars and legends explained how they were given the iconic number.

More than just a number on a shirt

Manchester United has had some iconic players in their hallowed dressing room and stadium, but some stars are immortalised at the club for wearing the number 7 jersey.

Wearing number 7 at United was first popularized by the great George Best and it followed by one of Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest captains at the club, Bryan Robson.

90's cult hero Eric Cantona explained the significance of the number and why fans enjoyed his style of play during his time at Old Trafford:

"At Manchester United, it means something more. It [Manchester] was a city for the number seven. The number seven is someone who can create things, sometimes one who needs to be free.

"Sir Alex Ferguson gave me this number. I play football like I play in the streets, like I play with my friends, the fans love this kind of player."

David Beckham explained how he reacted when Sir Alex Ferguson handed him the iconic 7:

"I think I cried," he says.

"My dad was the first person that I phoned. He was a Bobby Charlton fan, that's why my middle name is Robert. My dad was a hardcore United fan, so the fact that I was then his son, playing for Manchester United, wearing the number seven shirt, I knew how important that was."

"All players know, in Manchester and around the world as well, that the number seven is a mythic number at this club," explains Ronaldo on the United website.

Ronaldo, who's wearing the number 7 for the second time at the Red Devils after his return from Juventus in 2021, went on to explain how Fergie handed him the iconic number on the club's site:

"Sir Alex Ferguson said to me, 'You're going to take the number seven.' It was that kind of moment that you never forget.

"I knew the history of the number seven in the club, But at the same time, I was feeling good, After an experienced manager, and an experienced person [Sir Alex] knew that Cristiano was the right player to wear that shirt."
