The Buccaneers are back in the country, following their 2-1 aggregate loss against Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia last weekend.

Despite the loss in the Confed Cup final in Sousse, each player that represented Pirates and South Africa during the continental competition is said to be eligible for R30 000 in prize money from the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula.

Mbalula's spokesperson, Mickey Modisane, confirmed to the Siya crew that 23 Pirates players qualify for the money.

"Yes, it's for excellent recognition and this is not something new. The minister mentioned this during the sports awards. That's why some of the players were there. Lucky Lekgwathi, Happy Jele and Brighton Mhlongo all received trophies. It was to say to them, as part of our annual performance plan, we have to recognise excellent performances.

"Orlando Pirates has been recognised alongside the Springboks national team and Banyana Banyana. 23 Orlando Pirates players that were part of the CAF Confederation Cup have been recognised. It's R30 000 for each one of them," said Modisane.

With each of the 23 players getting R30 000 according to Modisane, it means that no less than R690 000 will be shared among the Pirates squad from the office of the Minister.

However, Mbalula has been tweeting this afternoon (Wednesday) that there has been no player from any club that has received a 'bonus' from his office.

"Mickey Modisane was not mandated to go to the airport or speak on my behalf - I'm from the home of Mr Sindani to offer our condolences," Mbalula tweeted.
