Confederation Cup Final Match Report: Orlando Pirates 1-1 Etoile du Sahel

CAF Confederarion Cup

Result: Orlando Pirates 1-1 Etoile du Sahel

Date: 21 November 2015

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Orlando Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw by Etoile du Sahel in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final.

The Buccaneers had the first meaningful effort of the game inside the opening 10 minutes, as Thabo Matlaba fired a long range not to far off the target.

Etoil did have the ball in the back of the net in the 11th minute but the goal was flagged for offside.

The visitors were nearly gifted the lead in the 29th minute, following a mix-up with Felipe Ovono and his defence but Boundjah poked his effort wide of the upright.

However, it was Pirates who broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, as Thamsanqa Gabuza turned his marker, before rifling the ball into the top corner from a tight angle.

Eric Tinkler's managed to see out the rest of the first half, while Ovono pulled off a fine save in the closing stages to keep the lead, as they went into the break.

The visitors got off to the brighter start in the second half, but it was the Buccaneers who almost doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute when Mpho Makola's long range forced Jebali into a fine save.

Etoile went close to drawing themselves level in the 60th minute, as Lahmar rattled the upright with a fine free-kick from 25-yards out.

The frustrations started to show for the Etoil players, as they expressed their dissatisfaction at most of the referee's calls in the second half.

Etoile started seeing more of the ball, as the second half went on and Tinkler responded by bringing on defensive midfielder, Issa Sarrm for the final 10 minutes.

The visitors eventually leveled matters in the 87th minute, as Ammar Jemal rifled the ball past Ovono from six-yards out, after Pirates failed to deal with a set-piece.

Pirates pushed for a winner in the final stages, but they could not bypass the Etoile defence, as the score remained 1-1 at the full-time whistle.

Here's how they lined up:

Orlando Pirates: Ovono, Sangweni, Jele, Gcaba, Matlaba, Masalesa, Ntshumayelo, Makola, Rakhale, Gabuza, Erasmus

Etoile du Sahel: Jebali; Boughattas, Nagguez, Aderrazak, Jemal; Franck Kom, Lahmar, Brigui, Mohamed Amine Ben Amor, Msakni; Baghdad Bounedja
