The hosts got off to the better start and managed to force Denis Onyango into a few saves in the opening 15 minutes. The Ghanaian outfit then squandered a golden chance to take the lead after 30 minutes, as Abbas failed to convert from inside the six-yard box. Medeama were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty in the 34th minute, after Thabo Ntehthe was adjudged to have brought down Agyie. Akwa stepped up and converted from the spot, 1-0. However, it was the hosts who grabbed the next goal thanks to a strike from Aforu in the 65th minute. It went from bad to worse for Sundowns in the aftermath of the goal, as Onyango was sent off for kicking out at Abass. Depsite the numerical disadvantage, Sundowns pushed for a crucial away goal in the final stages of the second half but could not bypass the Medeama defence.
