Pirates went into the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup semi-final clash against Al Ahly with a 1-0 lead and many in the football fraternity thought they had left themselves with too much to do in Egypt.
The Soweto giants proved those doubters wrong beating Al Ahly 4-3 in Egypt and taking the tie 5-3 on aggregate. Matlaba, who was on the scoresheet for Bucs, has indicated that the Al Ahly fans cheered for the Pirates team after their encounter.
"The atmosphere in the change room was just unbelievable. After the final whistle we went on sayobulisa (to greet) their supporters and they congratulated and cheered us on," Matlaba told Soccer Laduma.
"They couldn't believe what had just happened. You will also remember that a lot of people wrote us off after our first leg but we remained confident.
"We badly wanted to reach the final and it was really good to win so convincingly. I think the reception we received at OR Tambo summed it all up.
"It was such an emotional moment to see everyone so happy and united. We had supporters from different teams congratulating us and that really felt good.
"We aren't only representing ourselves or the club but the country as well. It is so good to see that everyone is behind us," he added.
