A referee has claimed that Ronwen Williams should’ve been handed a red card during the second leg of Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League quarter-final clash.

Earlier this week, Masandawana came away from Rades with a 0-0 draw against Esperance Sportive de Tunis. The result was enough to see the South African side progress to the Champions League semi-finals for a third successive season, as they exacted revenge on the team that eliminated them from last season’s iteration of the competition.
However, their progression to the tournament’s final four was not without controversy, as the Tunisian side had a goal disallowed in the match. Achref Jabri thought he had levelled matters on aggregate when he found the back of the net in the 63rd minute, but after a lengthy VAR check, the goal was ruled offside.
According to former Tunisian referee Adel Zahmoul, the goal should’ve stood, and he has lamented Senegalese referee Issa Sy for the decision. Zahmoul did not stop there, however, as he also claims that Sundowns shot-stopper Williams should’ve been sent off during the match for allegedly stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity outside the penalty area.
He insisted that Sy changed the outcome of the match entirely with these two decisions and was not justified in either of them.

"The Senegalese referee wronged Esperance and affected the outcome of the match. That's for sure,” the ex-official told Mosaique FM.
