Sundowns, Wits, SuperSport and CT City Know Their Next CAF Opponents

South Africa's four teams in CAF competition will jet out to three different countries next month as they seek progression to the next round. While Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United received byes for the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively, Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City were able to progress, thanks to respective wins over Pamplemousses and Young Buffaloes. Now, with Masandawana and Wits targeting a group-stage spot and Matsatsantsa and City taking aim at the play-off round, they all know their opponents as they make plans to fly to Angola, Rwanda and Mozambique. They romped to the league title by 12 points last year and beat LLB Académic FC of Burundi in the last round of the CCL to progress. Primeiro de Agosto v Bidvest Wits: The Clever Boys face a tough task against one of the biggest sides in Angola. The Luanda-based outfit have won the Girabola 11 times since 1979 and have plenty of pedigree on the continent. Jacques Bitumba already has three goals in the competition. Zimbabwe's FC Platinum were the team they knocked out in the preliminaries. Petro de Luanda v SuperSport United: Like Wits, SuperSport will be flying out to Luanda for the first leg of their CCC tie, where Eric Tinkler's team will come up against the most successful team in Angola. They have experience in both tiers of CAF competition and are no stranger to Matsatsantsa, having played them in 2013. Costa do Sol v Cape Town City: City won't have to travel far in their first ever CCC first round clash, with a quick flight to Mozambique's capital, Maputo, to face Costa do Sol. The nine-time Moçambola champs are in the competition after winning last season's Taça de Moçambique (their 12th win) and they saw off Jwaneng Galaxy in the last round. The first legs of these ties are due to be played on either the 6th or 7th of March, before the second legs – all in South Africa – take place between the 16th and 18th.
