Result: Bidvest Wits 1-0 Primero de Agosto (1-1 on agg. - Agosto won 3-2 on pens)
Date: 17 March 2018
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
Bidvest Wits failed to advance to the CAF Champions League group stages after losing 3-2 on penalties to Primero de Agosto on Saturday evening.
The Students signaled their attacking intent from the onset as Daylon Claasen and Sifiso Myeni caused problems on the flanks.
Vince Pule went close to breaking the deadlock after 12 minutes, but his curling effort was smothered by the Agosto goalkeeper.
Gavin Hunt's men enjoyed a lot of the possession but they were let down by their final pass on a number of occasions.
With five minutes remaining in the half, Wits carved out an opening as Sifiso Hlanti picked out Thulani Hlatshwayo, who sent a header just wide of the upright.
Wits continued to dictate the tempo in the second half, but they found it tough to break down the Agosto defence.
Gavin Hunt opted for a change on the hour mark as Pule made way for veteran winger Daine Klate.
Majoro squandered a chance to put Wits ahead after 69 minutes as he fired wide of the upright after being played through on goal by Thobani Mncwango.
With 10 minutes remaining, Wits managed to take the lead on the night with Elias Pelembe squeezing home a left-footed strike to make it 1-1 on aggregate.
Wits could not find a second goal in the closing stages, which forced the game into a penalty shoot-out.
However, it was the Angolan side who held their nerve to triumph in the shoot-out 3-2 and secured their spot in the group stages.
Here's how they lined up:
Wits: Peters, Hlatshwayo, Gyimah, Scott, Rodgers. Hlanti, Claasen, Mkhwanazi, Mncwango, Frosler, Majoro.
Subs: Keet, Khumalo, Ntshangase, Pelembe, Myeni, Kodisang.
