5 Of Sundowns' Biggest Champions League Wins

5 Of Sundowns' Biggest Champions League Wins

Following their 7-0 victory over La Passe at Loftus Stadium on Sunday, Soccer Laduma looks back at five of Mamelodi Sundowns' biggest wins in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns were in cruise control over their opponents at the weekend and it's not an unfamiliar position for them, having registered some big wins in the past in the continental club competition.

The one which probably stands out the most for the Sundowns supporters is the 5-0 win over Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the first leg of the quarterfinals in 2019. The victory was inspired by goals from Themba Zwane, Wayne Arendse, Ricardo Nascimento, Gaston Sirino and Phakamani Mahlambi.

During the 2018/19 season, Sundowns cruised to a 5-1 victory over Leones Vegetarianos in the second leg of the preliminary round. The goals were scored by Jeremy Brockie, Sirino, Hlompho Kekana, Jose Ali Meza and Lyle Lakay. The Tshwane giants won the two-legged tie 7-1 on aggregate after beating the West Africans 2-0 in the first leg.

The biggest victory for Sundowns in the competition was when the club beat Cote d'Or 11-1 in the second leg of the first round clash in 2019/20, just before the group stages. The Tshwane giants have won the first leg 5-0 in Mozambique, thanks to a brace from Tiyani Mabunda, while Lakay, Sphelele Mkhulise and Arendse also got on the scoresheet.

In the 11-1 drubbing in Tshwane, there were 10 different goalscorers. Sibusiso Vilakazi netted a brace, while Zwane, Sirino, Oupa Manyisa, Thapelo Morena, Mauricio Affonso the Anele Ngcongca and Motjeka Madisha, also contributed with goals. There was also an own goal.

During the 2020/21 campaign, Sundowns hammered Algerian side CR Belouizdad 5-1 in North Africa in the group stages. Zwane netted a brace, while Peter Shalulile, Lebohang Maboe and Kermit Erasmus joined in on the goals.
