UEFA Nations League Report: Spain v England 15 October 2018

UEFA Nations League

Result: Spain 2-3 England

Date: 15 October 2018

Venue: Estadio Benito Villamarín

England put in an impressive display as they edged Spain 3-2 in the UEFA Nations League at the Estadio Benito Villamarín on Monday evening.

Spain dominated the opening exchanges, with the likes of Marcos Alonso and Marco Asensio going close to scoring in the opening 10 minutes.

It was England who broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, as Marcus Rashford set Raheem Sterling on his way, and the Manchester City star rifled the ball into the top corner, leaving David de Gea with no chance.

The lead was doubled in the 29th minute as Harry Kane turned provider to pick out Rashford, who controlled well before firing past a helpless De Gea.

It got better for the visitors after 38 minutes. Ross Barkley's neat pass found Kane, who in-turn picked out Sterling for a simple tap-in from six-yards out.

That proved to be the final goal-mouth action of the half, as the Three Lions took a comfortable three-goal lead into the break.

With Spain struggling to break down England, Luis Enrique threw on Paco Alcacer and Dani Ceballos in the 55th minute.

Alcacer's impact was immediate, as the Borussia Dortmund forward - on loan from FC Barcelona - nodded home Asensio's corner two minutes after his arrival to make it 3-1.

La Roja were in full control as the half went on, as the likes of Alcacer and Asensio went close to scoring with efforts from distance.

Spain were rewarded with a second goal with the final kick of the game as Sergio Ramos fired home from close range, but England held on for the win.
