Zinedine Zidane Names African & His Son In UEFA Champions League Squad

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane named an African youngster and another of his sons in Los Blancos' official UEFA Champions League group stage squad.

The Frenchman did not insist on a "Galactico" signing in the latest window, choosing to add some youth to his squad instead – they only bought 19-year-old left back Theo Hernandez, as competition for Marcelo, and 20-year-old central midfield talent Dani Ceballos.

In addition, Moroccan starlet Achraf Hakimi was promoted from the youth ranks and it seems Zidane will trust the 18-year-old to feature as a back-up right back for Dani Carvajal this season as no other player has been brought in for that position.

Hakimi was born in Madrid to parents of Moroccan descent and joined the club's youth academy when he was eight years old. He made his senior debut for the African country in October 2016 and was again called up during the current international break, scoring one goal in Morocco's 6-0 rout of Mali.

Luca Zidane is the Los Blancos coach's second son to make the Real squad – left wing Enzo was part of his father's selection last season but has since joined La Liga side Deportivo Alaves. Luca, 19, has been included as the team's third-choice goalkeeper.

In addition, Jesus Vallejo (20), who spent last season out on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, will replace Pepe in Real's squad, while Marcos Llorente (22) has been added as another midfield option after James Rodriguez joined Bayern Munich on a two-year loan.

Up front, with Alvaro Morata and Mariano Diaz having left the club, Borja Mayoral, another player returning from a loan spell, is now also part of the squad.

Here is Real's UCL squad in full, as announced by UEFA:

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla, Luca Zidane*

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Jesus Vallejo, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Marcelo, Theo Hernandez, Achraf Hakimi, Jose Leon, Alvaro Tejero*, Manu Hernando*

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Borja Mayoral, Francho, Dani Gomez*, Oscar*

* These players qualify through UEFA's so-called B-list for players younger than 20.
