Defending champions Bayern Munich sent out a warning to their UEFA Champions League rivals with a convincing 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.
Atletico came close to opening the scoring in the third minute. Yannick Carrasco rolled a pass out wide to Renan Lodi and he sent a perfect low ball across the face of goal. Luis Suarez attacked it with an oustretched leg, but it just evaded the Uruguayan and rolled behind for a goal-kick.
The hosts had their first decent opportunity in the seventh minute. Kingsley Coman surged down the left flank and whipped a cross towards the right inside channel. Lewandowski attacked the delivery and guided a strike towards goal with his right foot. However, his effort sailed just wide of the left post.
Bayern centre-back Niklas Sule saw his effort clatter the woodwork from close range. Muller flicked on Kimmich's corner from the right flank and Sule sticked out a leg to guide a strike towards the target. It rolled towards goal, but struck the right post and bounced to safety.
The Bavarians broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Joshua Kimmich won possession in the Atletico half from Joao Felix before floating a precise cross into the left inside channel. Coman drifted behind Kieran Trippier, took a touch and then slotted his strike past Jan Oblak from close range.
The second goal for Bayern came five minutes before the interval. Lewandowski led a break into the Atletico half before feeding Coman. He sent a low ball across the box to Leon Goretzka. The midfielder took a touch before rifling his strike inside the left post beating the hand of Oblak.
Corentin Tolisso blasted a strike into the top-right corner from 20 yards in the 66th minute. Kimmich saw his shot from a free-kick blocked, but the ball landed at the feet of Tolisso, who needed no invitation to fire at goal and he let fly with a bullet that soared away from Oblak and into the back of the net.
Coman notched his second of the game with a special strike six minutes later. He was released into acres of space by a precise pass from Thomas Muller from his own half. The winger surged into the box before twisting Felipe one way then the other. He held his composure to slide his strike away from Oblak into the bottom-left corner.
