Rogerio Ceni, goalkeeper for Sao Paulo FC, has scored an incredible 61 penalties in his career so far.
The Brazilian's 61 penalty goals surpass Messi's current 56, but Ceni has also scored 60 free-kicks, while two of his goals remain unconfirmed.
The 42-year-old, who has been playing for Sao Paulo since 1993, is the most prolific goalkeeper in the history of the game after scoring 123 career goals to date.
Messi has now missed five of his last 10 penalties for Barcelona and Argentina, and has an overall conversion rate of just 79 percent.
Former Barcelona greats Ronald Koeman (88 percent), Ronaldinho (87 percent) and Rivaldo (84 percent) all had a better conversion rate than Messi.
His long-standing rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, has an overall conversation rate of 87 percent during his career, and that increases to 92 percent (stats from AS) when looking at his time in Madrid alone.

Arguably the most prolific penalty taker in the game was England's Matthew Le Tissier, who converted 47 of his 48 spot-kicks.
