Earlier this year, the richest footballer was said to be former Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has an estimated net worth of about $450 million (R6.5 billion), although that figure is likely to have risen since.
Second on the list was ex-Manchester United and Los Blancos midfielder David Beckham with the same reported net worth as Ronaldo, with Lionel Messi third in the ranking.
The FC Barcelona captain reportedly accumulated about $400 million (R5.8 billion) as of earlier in 2020, with the man in the next place, David Whelan, being some way off of Messi's apparent net worth.
Whelan, 84, was a professional footballer for Blackburn Rovers and Crewe Alexandra in the 1950s and 1960s, and is the former owner of Wigan Athletic, for whom he also served as chairman for 20 years.
