The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has made a big statement regarding Lionel Messi's involvement with the national team during the upcoming international break.

The 2023/24 season could not have got off to a better start for the Rosario native with Inter Miami.

In the five games that the 36-year-old has played so far this campaign, he has managed to produce either a goal or an assist.

His five goals and two assists in his opening five games in all competitions have further emphasised how important he is to the Herons.

However, in the past two matches, the Major League Soccer outfit have had to contend without their talisman as he sustained a hamstring injury, and now the Albiceleste will also have to face off against El Salvador and Costa Rica deprived of their captain, with it being confirmed by the AFA that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will be absent for their upcoming international friendlies.

"Lionel Messi will not be able to be in the squad for the friendlies in the United States due to a minor injury to the hamstring of his right leg suffered in his team Inter Miami's match against Nashville SC. In addition, Exequiel Palacios was also sidelined due to a muscle injury," an official statement from the federation read.

The diminutive icon will continue his rehabilitation in Florida, and with Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino recently stating that he hopes to have his superstar back in time for their next CONCACAF Champions Cup match, the MLS side's fans can expect Messi to be missing from action for the next two weeks.
