The Argentine forward collected the prestigious accolade this week, and became the first footballer to lift the Golden Shoe a fifth time.
In doing so, Messi overtook Ronaldo, who was the first to claim four Golden Shoes.
"I did not expect all of this when I started," Messi said upon receiving the award, as quoted by Marca.
"My dream was to be a professional, to be able to succeed in football.
"I enjoy the work, the effort and, above all, the teammates. I am in the best team in the world, I am next to the best in the world in their positions and that makes everything easier (when it comes to) winning these awards."
Messi received the Golden Shoe after scoring 34 goals in LaLiga last season, finishing as the top goalscorer in all of Europe's domestic leagues.
