The 30-year-old scored 37 goals in La Liga last season, more than other player in Europe's top leagues.

As a consequence, he received his fourth Golden Shoe on Friday, drawing level with Ronaldo, who also finished as the top goalscorer in Europe four times so far.

During an exclusive interview to Marca soon after the ceremony, Messi spoke about his relationship with his great rival, saying it does not go far beyond the pitch and award ceremonies.

"I don't know if we will be," he said when asked whether he could be good friends with Ronaldo.

"Friendship is built through spending time together and getting to know each other.

"We have no relationship, mainly because we only see each other at awards ceremonies, and that's the only time we speak.

"Everything is fine, but our lives don't cross over very often."
