Argentine legend Javier Zanetti believes the comparisons between Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona need to come to an end.
Messi Outclasses Ronaldo In 2016
The debate around Messi and Maradona has been going on for years, and many football players and supporters have had their say on the matter.
Messi's career may be filled with more team accolades than Maradona, but he is yet to match the former Napoli forward's greatest achievement: leading Argentina to victory in the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Zanetti feels Messi does not need to win a World Cup to prove he is one of the greatest players ever, and has urged the comparisons of the two to stop.
"I do not understand the comparisons between the two," Zanetti told FourFourTwo.
"I think Diego was unique and Messi is doing unique things.
"What can you say about Messi? A guy who has won five Ballons d'Or, four Champions Leagues and has scored 97 (sic) goals in a year.
"There is no need to win a World Cup to certify that talent.
"Messi is an ambassador of Argentina, and I am also proud of him as an Argentine."
