Cristiano Ronaldo Closes In On Serie A Golden Boot Leader

Cristiano Ronaldo Closes In On Serie A Golden Boot Leader

Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is closing in on the leader in the 2019/20 Serie A Golden Boot race, and could become the first player ever to win the award in England, Spain and Italy.

Ronaldo has scored a goal in every league game since the restart of the 2019/20 Serie A campaign, taking his total tally to 26 strikes for the season.

He has now scored five more goals than the 21 strikes he finished with at the end of last season, when he lost out on the Golden Boot title to Fabio Quagliarella.

The Sampdoria striker finished 2018/19 with 26 goals, which was enough to beat Duvan Zapata (23 goals) and Krzysztof Piatek (22 goals) to the award known as the Capocannoniere in Italy.

This season, however, Ciro Immobile leads the ranking with 29 strikes, already equalling his personal best return in Serie A. The Lazio forward, though, has scored just two league goals since the restart of football in Italy, allowing Ronaldo to close the gap.

Immobile has won the award twice, with Torino in 2013/14 with 22 goals and then sharing the accolade with Mauro Icardi in 2017/18 when they both finished on 29 strikes.

Over the past 62 years, only two players have managed to score 30 goals or more in Italy's top flight, with Luca Toni finishing on 31 strikes for Fiorentina in 2005/06 and Gonzalo Higuain scoring 36 times for Napoli in the 2015/16 campaign.

Ronaldo will thus need to crack the 30-goal mark if he wants to lift his first ever Capocannoniere title and become the first player ever to claim the Golden Boot in England, Spain and Italy.

Both Immobile and Ronaldo have seven more Serie A games left to play, and are also still in the running for the European Golden Shoe title, for which Robert Lewandowski currently leads the ranking with 34 goals.
