Wayne Rooney has defended his comments about his former teammate after Cristiano Ronaldo implied that the Englishman was a "rat".
Official: Man Utd Release New Ronaldo Statement
Ronaldo shared the Manchester United dressing room with Rooney for five years and in the Portuguese's controversial interview with Piers Morgan, the Englishman came up where it was said that: "Well, not only him, imagine the rest of the rats that criticise me too."
Rooney replied to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's comments after receiving the Player Career Award at the 2022 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.
"Cristiano Ronaldo's a fantastic player and, as I've said before, he and Messi are the two best players probably to play the game," Rooney told CNN.
"And, again, it's not a criticism. What I've said is age comes to all of us, and Cristiano is obviously feeling now that he's finally had to deal with that.
"Obviously, he's done an interview, and it's gone global, and it's strange, some of the comments are strange. But I'm sure Manchester United will deal with it once they've seen the full interview, and they will take whatever action they need to take."
Varane Makes Ronaldo Interview Admission
The five-time Premier League winner was not the only one that Ronaldo criticised as the former Real Madrid man slighted United head coach Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick and the club's owners.
Gary Neville, another former teammate that has been critical of Ronaldo, has suggested that the football icon has intentionally burnt his bridges at Old Trafford and earlier this week there have been reports that both Ten Hag and the squad want the Madeira native gone.
