Manchester United have issued a new statement in response to Cristiano Ronaldo's controversial interview with English broadcaster Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo Blasts Ten Hag, Explains Fallout
The Red Devils have said they have "initiated appropriate steps" following the 37-year-old's interview that was released in full on Thursday.
In his conversation with Morgan, Ronaldo lambasted the club's lack of progress since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, while he also revealed the details of his frosty relationship with Dutch manager Erik ten Hag.
The Portuguese criticised his younger teammates as well, leading to suggestions in the press that the five-time Ballon d'Or has made an attempt to get out of his contract at Old Trafford.
Earlier this week, United said they would await the release of the full interview before taking action, with the club now having stated that they have started the process.
"Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo's recent media interview," the statement read.
"We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion."
Rumours suggest the Red Devils are currently in talks to terminate the Portugal captain's contract in England with immediate effect, as they do not want him to return to the club after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Ronaldo has made 16 appearances for United this season in all competitions, scoring three goals.
