Neymar Set To Stand Trial

Neymar Set To Stand Trial

Brazil talisman Neymar is set to stand trial next week over his transfer to Barcelona almost a decade ago.

Neymar's parents, former Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, and former Santos president Odilio Rodrigues will also stand next to the Paris Saint-Germain star as defendants in a Barcelona court room next week Monday.

The case has been brought by a Brazilian company called DIS, which owned 40% of the player's rights at the time of the transfer after acquiring them when he was 17 years old for only €2 million (R35 million).

DIS have accused the aforementioned defendants of undercutting the company of their rightful percentage following the Brazil international's move from Santos to the Blaugrana because the true value of the transfer was withheld at the time.

Neymar moved to the home of the Catalan giants in 2013 for a reported fee of €88 million (R1.5 billion) from the Brazilian outfit, but DIS feel they were obliged to more of a cut from the transfer because, at the time, Barca stated that they had only paid Santos €57.1 million (R1 billion) for his services.

Prosecutors from Spain want Neymar to serve a two-year prison sentence and pay a €10 million (R177 million) fine.

Baker McKenzie, the law firm that will be defending Neymar and his family, informed Reuters, as per ESPN, that their argument is that the Spanish courts "lack jurisdiction to prosecute the Neymar family" since the transfer involved Brazilian nationals in Brazil.

"Neymar's rights have not been sold to the highest bidder. There were clubs that offered up to €60 million," DIS lawyer Paulo Nasser said in a news conference on Thursday.
