Ligue 1
Result: AS Monaco 2-0 Saint Etienne
Date: 17 May 2017
Venue: Stade Louis II
AS Monaco have been crowned Ligue 1 champions for the first time in 17 years, after recording a 2-0 win over Saint-Etienne on Wednesday evening.
It was an open affair in the early stages, although the visitors went close through Maiga after 10 minutes.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock in the 19th minute as Kylian Mbappe latched onto a pass from Radamel Falcao, before calmly slotting home.
Saint-Etienne could have leveled matters in the 34th minute when Florentin Pogba rose well to meet Veretout's cross but Danjiel Subasic was well-positioned to deal with the effort.
Falcao went close to adding his name on the score-sheet just before the halftime break, but he failed to connect with Bernard Silva's inch-perfect cross.
Subasic came to Monaco's rescue 10 minutes into the second half as he did well to keep out Nordin's close range effort.
With Monaco still searching for another goal, Leonardo Jardim introduced Valere Germain for Silva on 70 minutes.
Germain nearly made the perfect impact when he tried his luck from distance in the 80th minute, but Ruffier was on hand to deny the midfielder with superb save.
Monaco managed to grab a second goal in stoppage time as Thomas Lemar unselfishly teed up Germain, who slotted home from close range to hand Monaco the French league title.
