The Frenchman was said to be high on Mourinho's transfer wish list, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) decision to uphold Atletico's transfer ban has cast doubt over a potential move.
The Rojibancos' ban will now run until January 2018, which means they would not be able to sign a replacement for their main star if he decided to leave.
"It's a tough moment for the club, for my teammates, and it would be a low blow to leave now," Griezmann recently told Telefoot.
According to The Independent, the player has even called Mourinho and urged him not to continue his pursuit of him in this window.
United were reportedly prepared to meet Griezmann's €100 million (R1.4 billion) release clause, but are now expected to look at alternatives.
