Jose Mourinho's side apparently want to bring in a new No. 9 after it was confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic's expiring deal will not be extended.
The English publication has claimed that Morata is United's top attacking target, and has agreed a deal in principle.
United, though, still need to agree terms on a transfer fee with Los Blancos after an initial £52.3 million (R857 million) bid was reportedly rejected.
The Telegraph suggested that United will go back and offer £60 million (R984 million) for the 24-year-old, which the club apparently believes will be enough to tempt Real to sell.
Morata has also reportedly told close friends he will be playing for United next season, and is looking forward to working under Mourinho.

"He doesn't want to go through another season like that," Lopez said, as quoted by The Telegraph.
"It was a great season, but he wants to play more.
"Alvaro is a player who wants to play a more important role. He wants to play more.
"That's normal for a striker who's scored 19 goals. It's not enough."
