Arsenal have made their first signing of the January transfer window and confirmed the capture of an African star who was once considered not good enough by Al Ahly.

The Gunners confirmed the successful transfer of Egypt international Mohamed Elneny from Basel via the club's official website on Thursday.
The 23-year-old, who has made 40 appearances for Egypt, joins Arsene Wenger's side, subject to the completion of regulatory processes.

Elneny made 28 appearances for Basel this season, scoring six goals. He has been an instrumental part of the Swiss club since joining them from Egyptian side El Mokawloon in 2013.
Overall, the central midfielder made 144 appearances for Basel, and has Champions league experience.

Elneny is a youth product of African giants Al Ahly, but was released from the club as 15-year-old in 2008.
