FC Barcelona Could Start Season Without Official Manager

FC Barcelona Could Start Season Without Official Manager

FC Barcelona have undergone changes during the off-season, with new boss Ronald Koeman being roped in, but the Dutchman may have to start the season watching from the stands.

The former Netherlands boss replaced Quique Setien in the club's dugout following Barca's humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, while also seeing Real Madrid beat them to the LaLiga title.

However, in the haste to make changes, the Blaugrana simply relieved Setien of his duties, instead of firing the manager, which means his contract remains in place.

According to GiveMeSport, Setien wants a full year's salary as compensation, and until the dispute is sorted, Koeman is reportedly in limbo.

The Spanish FA cannot officially list Koeman as manager of the Catalans until an agreement with Setien is reached, which could result in him being unable to sit on the bench for official matches.

Barca's financial concerns have been widely reported, and with the club looking to sell in order to fund reinforcements, a hefty settlement with their former head coach could prove to be yet another hurdle.

On the field, Koeman saw his side produce an impressive display as they cruised to a 3-1 win over Girona in a friendly on Wednesday night, and the club will be desperate to have the matter resolved ahead of the start of the 2020/21 campaign.
