FA Cup Third Round
Result: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Liverpool
Date: 07 January 2019
Venue: Molineux Stadium
Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round after losing 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium on Monday evening.
Jurgen Klopp made several changes from the side that lost to Manchester City as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Alisson and Virgil van Dijk dropped out of the line-up.
Five minutes into the game, the Reds were forced into a change when defender Dejan Lovren tweaked his hamstring. He was replaced by 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever.
The visitors were in control for most of the first half despite the numerous changes, but the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi were left frustrated without any services.
However, Wolves broke the deadlock in the 38th minute as an error from James Milner allowed Raul Jimenez to run in on goal and slot into the far corner to send his side one goal up at the break.
The Reds didn't take too long to find an equaliser as Origi carved out some space before rifling the ball the ball past John Ruddy from the edge of the box in the 50th minute.
Liverpool's joy, however, was short-lived as Wolves restored their lead five minutes later through Ruben Neves, who was afforded space to smash home a shot from 20-yards out.
Xherdan Shaqiri went agonisingly close to pulling the visitors level with 20 minutes remaining after rattling the upright with a curling free-kick. Moments later, Klopp threw on Salah and Firmino for the remaining stages of the second as the Reds went in pursuit of an equaliser.
However, the home side remained resolute in the latter stages to see out the win and secure their spot in the fourth round.
