The Colombian is one of only two Los Blancos players – the other being Cristiano Ronaldo – who have reached double figures in both goals and assists this season.
However, with his game time, particularly in the club's biggest clashes, being limited under Zinedine Zidane, Rodriguez has reportedly told his representatives to find him a new club.
ESPN reported earlier this week that the Red Devils have been made aware of attacking midfielder's desire to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, and Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has given two reasons why he thinks United are the frontrunners for Rodriguez's signature.
"James is wanted by many teams in Europe, and for me Manchester United are the favourites to get him," he wrote in his column for Sky Sports.
"His agent is Jorge Mendes, who is very close to Jose Mourinho.
"He is the kind of player who, instead of going to a club that is guaranteed to win the title next season, would be willing to help a team on the up, and Manchester United, with the investment coming in the summer, should be contenders for everything.
"Although it's one thing to be contenders and another thing to win."

Rodriguez has scored 11 goals and assisted another 13 strikes in 31 appearances across all competitions for Real this season, taking his total tally to 36 goals and 41 assists since joining the club for €75 million (R1.1 billion) in 2014.
