Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers withdrew their bid to buy Newcastle at the end of last month, bringing much speculation as to which players could join the club to an end.
The takeover would have reportedly made the Magpies one of the richest clubs in England, and was set to cost the consortium about £300 million (R6.8 billion).
If the deal were completed, it would have been the second-most expensive takeover of all time, ahead of Fenway Sports Group's 2010 purchase of the historic Liverpool, which reportedly cost £280 million (R6.3 billion).
The takeover of Manchester City by Sheikh Mansour in 2008 is the third most expensive of all time in England, a deal that was believed to be worth £210 million (R4.7 billion), while Chelsea's is fifth on the list.
