Aaron Ramsdale came in for David Raya, who is unable to play against his parent club while Leandro Trossard replaced the injured Gabriel Martinelli.

The Gunners dominated proceedings early on but had to wait until the 19th minute for the opening goal when Ben White's cross was nodeed home by Declan Rice.

The visitors were gifted the equaliser on the stroke of haltime when Ramsdale took too long to clear a ball, which ricocheted off Yoane Wissa and into the back of the net.

Ten minutes after the break, Ramsdale was nearly embarrased once again as Ivan Toney unleashed a superb long range strike but the goalkeeper, who was off his line, got back in time to make the save.

Artta eventually brought on a striker with 20 minutes to play as Gabriel Jesus came on, with Jorginho withdrawn from the midfield as they pushed for a winning goal.

The home side went close to pulling ahead three minutes later when Martin Odegaard  teed up Rice, who unleashed a first-time strike that crash against the crossbar.

Brentford's resistance broke with five minutes to play, as White turned provider once again and picked out Havertz who sent a powerful header into the back of the net.
