Manchester United's Most Expensive Defenders Ever

English giants Manchester United are known to spend serious money in order to ensure they have a solid defence, so today we take a look at the 10 most expensive defenders the Red Devils have purchased.

According to Transfermarkt, former Leeds United star and England international Rio Ferdinand is the club's most expensive defender ever, costing them €46 million (R789 million) in 2002.

In second place is current United left back Luke Shaw, who made the move from Southampton for a fee of €37.5 million (R651 million).

Third is another new boy, Marcos Rojo. The Argentine has struggled to become a first-team regular, and cost the club €20 million (R347 million) in 2014.

Fourth place goes to Ecuador fullback Antonio Valencia and England international Phi Jones. The pair cost the club €19 million (R329 million) each when they were purchased.

In sixth and seventh spots are new boys Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind. The Italian international joined United from Torino for €18 million (R312 million), while Blind was bought from Ajax Amsterdam for €17.5 million (R303 million).

In at eighth is former Netherlands defender Jaap Stam – the United stalwart is still seen as one for the best players to have ever played for the English side, and cost the Old Trafford club €17 million (R295 million).

In ninth and 10th place are United legend Nemanja Vidic and Gabriel Heinze. Vidic and Ferdinand went on to become one of the best centre back pairings the club has ever seen, while Heinze was loved for his commitment and toughness.
