In January, Mourinho signed a new contract until 2020 with the Manchester club, and as a consequence, United reportedly agreed to a massive pay-off instead of paying out the remainder of his deal.
The 55-year-old, who won three trophies during his stint at Old Trafford, will receive a massive £22.5 million (R407 million) pay-off, with the club still being in the UEFA Champions League, according to the Daily Mail.
It has also been claimed that club officials agreed that progress had stalled under Mourinho this season, and that a number of the club's youth prospects were not developing under the former FC Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid coach.
In addition, United have fallen 19 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, and 11 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, with 2019/20 Champions League qualification coming under serious threat.
