Arsenal took the lead in the 12th minute. Bukayo Saka played a beautiful pass in down the left-hand side for Aubameyang, who cut inside and curled a sumptuous effort in to the top left-hand corner.
Saka was looking threatening and created another chance just before half-hour mark. He slid a pass left to Nketiah, but the forward lacked Aubameyang's composure and lifted a shot over the crossbar.
Five minutes after the interval, Roberto Firmino was looking to replicate Aubameyang's opener by opening up on his right foot and shaping a shot towards the bottom-right corner but it just missed the post.
In the 56th minute, Emiliano Martinez had to be alert and on his toes in the Gunners' goal to thwart Sadio Mane, who had got in behind Rob Holding.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp brought on Takumi Minamino and Naby Keita for Neco Williams and James Milner respectively. And Minamino also made an instant impact. Keita broke through the midfield, slipped in Firmino, who drew a marker and squared to Minamino, whose shot was powerful but straight at Martinez.
In the 73rd minute, however, Minamino would not be denied. Fellow substitute Mohamed Salah was involved for the first time and darted from right to left into the area, causing chaos as the ball bounced around the box. It eventually broke to Minamino, who finished past Martinez for his first Liverpool goal.
Soon after, Mane looked certain to score. Cedric Soares was struggling badly up against Robertson, completely out of position as the ball came his way the first time and then unable to stop a second cross. Mane controlled on his chest, with Arsenal scrambling, but Martinez got out to block brilliantly once again.
With that, the match went to penalties. Rhian Brewster slipped up with Liverpool's third, while Arsenal maintained a hundred record percent to secure the shootout victory with Aubameyang netting the decisive penalty.
