English Premier League Report: Everton 1-0 Southampton 4 April 2015

Phil Jagielka provided the decisive strike as Everton beat Southampton 1-0 in their Premier League clash on Saturday. The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute. McCarthy unleashed a shot from inside the area but a superb last-ditch tackle from Ryan Bertrand prevented the goal. The Toffees took the lead in the 16th minute when Gareth Barry kept Leighton Baines's corner kick alive to flick it on for Jagielka to tap home from close range after some poor defending from Southampton. The Saints continued to play some attacking football after going behind and tested Tim Howard in the 28th minute when James Ward-Prowse powered forward from the middle of the pitch before firing at the goalkeeper who was up to the task. Some promising build-up play from Southampton saw Dusan Tadic feed Sadio Mane who flicked it over Barry and controlled it inside the area but he took a few too many touches which cost him the shooting opportunity. Another equalising chance was conjured up in the 73rd minute as Tadic danced around Muhamed Besic before finding Graziano Pelle who took a first-time shot only to see it fly just wide of the target. Elsewhere, West Ham lost 2-1 at Leicester City, Swansea beat Hull 3-1 and West Brom were beaten 4-1 at home by QPR.
