According to CalcioMercato, AS Roma are desperate to sign Belgium's all-time top goalscorer on a permanent basis after his great start to the new campaign.
In 2023/24, the 30-year-old marksman has already scored eight goals in his first 11 games at the club, and the Giallorossi are already exploring ways in which to keep him for the long term.
It is believed the Blues want at least €42 million (R833 million) for their club-record signing, but that may prove a difficult task for the west Londoners after they tried, and failed to sell him permanently this past off-season, with the price seemingly proving exorbitant for many European clubs and the Premier League giants ultimately loaning him out for a second straight season.
Chelsea are rumoured to not be eager on a third loan deal for the attacker, but his price tag may still be too high for three-time Scudetto winners Roma.
As a consequence, the same report claims that the Giallorossi will offer Tammy Abraham the opportunity to return to his boyhood club in a direct swap deal that would see Lukaku move in the opposite direction in a permanent capacity.
The Cobham alumni left Stamford Bridge for the Stadio Olimpico in 2012, and although he enjoyed his debut campaign in the Italian capital, the 2022/23 season was not as prolific for the London native, ending it on a low as he suffered a cruciate ligament injury to his knee, and it seems that Chelsea have concerns over his fitness as a result.

Manager Jose Mourinho staying at the club, or Antonio Conte coming in as his replacement, could prove decisive in the future of Roma's forward line as it is believed a manager of a smaller stature is unlikely to be able to retain Lukaku's services.
