Nottingham Forest returned to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years with a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at Wembley on Sunday.
Championship Play-Off Final
Result: Huddersfield Town 0-1 Nottingham Forest
Date: 29 May 2022
Venue: Wembley Stadium
It was a stop-start beginning to the match with neither side showing much quality in the final third in the opening exchanges.
Forest should have opened the scoring with the game's first opportunity in the 12th minute. Phillip Zinckernagel was brought down by Naby Sarr. It was a great cross into the box from the free-kick, which Ryan Yates flicked just wide when he had to score.
Huddersfield were not seeing much of the ball at all and were happy to just sit off and let Forest have it.
The Terriers threatened for the first time when Sorba Thomas skipped past Forest captain Joe Worrall on the right before hammering the ball across the face of goal and Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba had to punch it away to safety.
The momentum of the match had swayed as it was Huddersfield who were on top as half-time drew closer. However, Forest took the lead in stoppage time of the opening half. James Garner had space 30 yards out and whipped in the cross, which Levi Colwill inadvertently put into his own net with his attempted clearance.
Huddersfield's best moments had come from set-piece and they could easily have equalised in the 56th minute. Hogg made a mess of his attempted headed clearance from a corner whipped into the far post and it grazed the top of the crossbar as Forest nearly conceded an own goal of their own.
Forest had not threatened for quite some time but with 20 minutes to go came within inches of doubling their lead when Brennan Johnson dragged a shot across the face of goal and Sam Surridge couldn't get on the end of it.
Huddersfield then had two penalty appeals turned down and it appears the correct decision was made as players appeared to dive on both occasions, which VAR agreed with.
In the end, the single goal was enough to separate the sides as Forest take the initiative in the play-offs.
