Resut: Bayern Munich 2-1 Freiburg
Date: 17 January 2021
venue: Allianz Arena
Bayern Munich restored their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to four points with a 2-1 victory over SC Freiburg on Sunday.
Bayern made two alterations from their loss to Borussia Monchengladbach. Jerome Boateng returned at centre-back while Kingsley Coman was preferred to Leroy Sane. Freiburg were unchanged from their victory over Cologne.
In the seventh minute, Bayern caught Freiburg cold with Robert Lewandowski slotting coolly into the bottom right corner from Thomas Muller's throughball.
Bayern made a hash of clearing a Freiburg ball in and it fell kindly to Roland Sallai, who struck the ball towards the bottom right corner, forcing Neuer to tip it away for a corner soon after.
Alaba dribbled forward from centre-back in the 24th minute but, finding himself short of options, resorted to passing backwards. Bayern rebuilt and Gnabry thundered a left-footer towards goal from range. It took a sizeable deflection but Florian Muller managed to pull off an instinctive save to keep it out.
Lewandowski hit the crossbar from close range in the 58th minute before Muller kept Leon Goretzka's follow-up shot out with a dive to his right.
Nils Pietersen replaced the quiet Demirovic up front and made an instant impact. Nicolas Hofler flicked the corner to the far post with his head and Petersen arrived to power it into the net.
Thomas Muller gave Bayern the lead again in the 74th minute. Sane chested down a cross for Muller, who hit his shot into the ground and it bounced nicely into the far bottom corner.
Despite the visitors doing their utmost to find an equaliser in the final 15 minutes, it was not to be as Bayern got back to winning ways in the Bundesliga.
